Note From Keith To George Jones

This past Friday, ahead of plans for a farewell Grand Tour, country legend and friend of Keith, George Jones, passed away. A sold-out finale concert was scheduled for November 22 in Nashville, which was to feature a host of special guests, including The Oak Ridge Boys, Kid Rock and Cyndi Lauper.

From this handwritten note, obtained by The Tennessean, it seems that Keith was to be a surprise guest. Keith promised to be at the concert "by hook or by crook".

Keith made guest appearances on two of Mr. Jones' recordings - on the 2005 greatest hits release, The Bradley Barn Sessions and on the title track of 2008's Burn Your Playhouse Down: The Unreleased Duets.

Keith At Crossroads

This weekend, Keith made a surprise appearance at his old friend Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival. His performance at New York's Madison Square Gardens event drew a huge standing ovation in a night that featured other guitar legends like Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy.

Aaron Neville's latest record, My True Story, comes out on January 22. Keith co-produced the album with Don Was, and also provided guitar on some of the tracks.

Keith A Part Of New Rogue's Gallery

Keith is part of a new project put together by his friend, Johnny Depp. A while back, Depp, with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski and producer Hal Willner, to put together a compilation of pirate-themed songs called Rogue's Gallery. Seems they couldn't get enough. Gathering together a group of famous friends, Depp and co. are back with Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, due out February 19.

Keith appears with Tom Waits on the track "Shenandoah" on the first of the two discs. Other perfectly cast performances come from Shane MacGowan, Dr. John and Iggy Pop. This very special event, scheduled for December 12 at Madison Square Garden, will also feature appearances by Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, The Who and Paul McCartney.

Keith Co-Produces New Aaron Neville Album

Blue Note Records announced today that they will release a new album by the iconic singer Aaron Neville this fall. Produced by Keith and Don Was, the set will feature classic doo-wop covers, hand-picked by Neville himself.

Keith also lent his guitar on some of the tracks, but he's not the only big name to guest. Session players lending their talents to the recording include Greg Leisz on guitar (Beck, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams), Benmont Tench on organ (founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), George G. Receli on drums (Bob Dylan, James Brown), and Tony Scherr on bass (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright).

L.A. Friday '75 Available Now

The latest release in the Rolling Stones bootleg series is out now! L.A. Friday '75 was actually recorded on Sunday, July 13, at the final performance of the Stones' five-night residency at the Los Angeles Forum. The lineup for the show is Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, Ian "Stu" Stewart, Billy Preston, Ollie E. Brown and Trevor Lawrence.

Featuring beloved classics such as "Brown Sugar", "Gimme Shelter" and "Angie", the 20-track recording has been remastered by Bob Clearmountain. Check out this video with Mick and Keith reminiscing about the Forum shows, as well as vintage photos and footage from the L.A. shows.

On February 26, Keith was on hand, with Elvis Costello, to co-present his old friend Chuck Berry with the first PEN New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award. The inaugural award ceremony, held at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, also honoured legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen. Keith also jumped on stage for an impromptu duet with Costello, on Berry's "Promised Land".

Hubert Sumlin Benefit Concert

Following the success of their first official bootleg (The Brussels Affair) last November, the Rolling Stone have released a second official bootleg: Hampton Coliseum (Live 1981).

Recorded in Hampton, VA on December 18, 1981, the concert marked Keith’s 38 birthday, and has become notorious for an incident that occurred during the band’s performance of "(I Can’t Get No)Satisfaction". Spying a fan who had invaded the stage and was rushing towards Mick, Keith intervened and hit the intruder with his Telecaster.

Brussels '73 Now Available From Google Music

Google has just announced the launch of a new Google Music store in the Android Marketplace. Among the new store's exclusive new offerings is the first in a series of previously unreleased live recordings by the Rolling Stones. First up is the long-bootlegged October 1973 show in Brussels, officially released at last in a new mix overseen by the band.

You can download the whole thing now from the Android Marketplace, or get a free sample in the form of a rare performance of the song "Dancing With Mr. D". Five more shows will be released over the next year, so stay tuned for more announcements.

It has just been announced that Keith will be sitting on the panel of this year's Independent Music Awards. Along with a diverse group of industry legends, such as Ozzy Osbourne and Tom Waits, Keith will be helping to determine the winners of the IMA's 11th annual program in the World Beat & Blues categories.

The Independent Music Awards is a unique international program that connects self-released and independent label talent to new audiences and marketing opportunities. The program is currently accepting submissions through November 11, 2011. Nominees will be announced in December and the 11th IMA Winners will be announced in February, 2012.

Next Tuesday, October 25, sees the release of Bad As Me, the first new album in seven years from the one and only Tom Waits. It's also the third of Tom's albums that Keith has appeared on (following Rain Dogs and Bone Machine).

Keith lends his guitar work to three tracks on the album: "Chicago", "Satisfied", and "Hell Broke Luce", and adds both vocals and guitar to "Last Leaf".

Rockin' On The Docks

Keith made a visit to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyards yesterday for a private tour of the HMS Victory, which was famously helmed by military legend Admiral Horatio Nelson, during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Keith's interest in naval history isn't limited to his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. He told Dockyards spokeswoman Melissa Gerbaldi that "he grew up reading C. S. Forester's novels about Horatio Hornblower and then later Patrick O'Brian's novels on which Master and Commander was based."

At Spike TV's Guy's Choice Awards, held this this past Saturday, Keith was the recipient of not one, but two awards. Presented by Robert DeNiro, Keith was honoured with the Brass Balls award for his contributions to music, while his critically acclaimed memoir, Life, took the award for Outstanding Literary Achievement.

The Guy's Choice Awards will premiere on Spike this Friday, June 10, at 9 pm EST.

Keith is Disruptive!

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), in collaboration with noted Harvard Business School professor Clay Christensen, held the second edition of the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards on April 26. Honorees included Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales, Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration (DARPA) and author David Brooks and our own Keith Richards!

Keith was recognized for his use of the "Open G Tuning" method of guitar playing. Instead of the six strings used in standard guitar tuning, in the late 60's Keith created a disruptive innovation by playing chords and riffs on five-string open G banjo tuning on his electric guitar. "It changed my life," said Richards. This innovative use of Open G tuning embodied the hallmark sound of the Rolling Stones, leaving an indelible mark on rock and roll.

Keith's manager of 25 years, Jane Rose, accepted the award on his behalf. Festival co-founder and disruptive innovation spearheader Craig Hatkoff explained that he had always wondered why his version of "Honky Tonk" never sounded quite right. When he finally discovered Open G, "it sounded like a goddamn orchestra," he said.

First Glimpse of Keith in New Pirates of the Caribbean trailer

Captain Jack Sparrow will swashbuckle back into theaters this summer, with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment in the blockbuster series.

As he did in the last film, PotC: At World's End, Keith will appear as Captain Teague, father of Captain Jack. An exciting new trailer for the movie has just been released, and with it comes our first glimpse of Keith in the role. Rolling Stone magazine is in its third week of its "The Playlist Special" series. Fifty music artists have been invited to create a playlist of their favourite tracks, based on a theme of their choosing.

Last week, Keith's Roots and Reggae list went up, and features such classics as Jesse Fuller's "Stagolee", Erma Franklin's "Piece of My Heart", and the gorgeous Chuck Berry gem, "Memphis, Tennessee".

Says Keith, "When you're asked to do these sorts of lists, you don't want to come up with the obvious stuff. ...I was trying to think of stuff that's slipped between the cracks."

Keith Richards will visit Waterstone’s flagship branch in London’s Piccadilly in the UK from 5pm on Wednesday 3rd November to sign copies of his autobiography, Life.

As this will be Keith Richards’ sole UK appearance he will only be able to sign a strictly limited number of copies. The first 450 people in the queue outside Waterstone’s Piccadilly will be issued with special wristbands to get a chance to meet Keith Richards and get their copy signed by him.

Some of the world's greatest rock photographers are coming together to form an intimate look at the various stages of Keith's life in "Before They Make me Run – Portraits of Keith Richards '63 to '71." This is a unique opportunity to see how each photographer captured a different side of Keith. Not to be missed.

Johnny Depp to read Life audiobook

Hachette Audio has announced that award-winning actor Johnny Depp will read the audiobook edition of Keith's highly anticipated new autobiography. A part of pop culture since his days on 21 Jump Street, Depp has given memorable performances in films like Edward Scissorhands, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and this year's Alice In Wonderland.

One of Depp's best-known roles is Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Depp has said in interviews that he based the character on his friend Keith, a revelation that led to Keith's appearance as Captain Jacks' father in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Depp will be joined on the 22 and a half hour audiobook by fellow musician Joe Hurley and by Keith himself.

Keith Richards is giving fans an early Christmas Present

Keith is giving fans an early Christmas present by making two of his classic solo tracks available for the price of one exclusively on iTunes. First, we see the long-awaited re-release of Keith Richards' first ever solo recording, a barnstorming version of the Chuck Berry classic "Run Rudolph Run." The track was recorded in 1976 at Island Studios, London while Keith was mixing what would later become Love You Live. It came out as a limited 7-inch in late '78/early '79 and has been impossible to find ever since.

Equally collectable is the previously unreleased cover version of the Toots and the Maytals' "Pressure Drop," which he recorded in May 2003 at Dangerous Music in New York City. Keith was recording "Careless Ethiopians" with Toots and the Maytals for Toots' True Love album, released in April 2004. This crackerjack version of "Pressure Drop" was recorded at the same time.

"Run Rudolph Run" [M. Brodie, J. Marks]

In December 1978 Keith Richards had released his very first solo record on Rolling Stones records The Harder They Come b/w "Run Rudolph Run" [RSR102] in the U.S. The record would later be released in the U.K. in February 1979. "Run Rudolph Run" was first made popular by Chuck Berry in 1958. Since then it has been recorded over a dozen times by artist such as Sheryl Crow, Dave Edmunds, Grateful Dead & the Beach Boys.

Back Story

In late 1976, while in London, Keith one night decided to go down to Island Studios. It being Christmas time, Keith decided to get into the holiday spirit by doing a version of one of his idols songs, Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run". He put a call into Ian Stewart to set up studio time, and he, Stu and whoever else was available headed down to Island for a jam session. It had been a slow time in Rolling Stones recording and the only other thing Keith was active with at this time was working with John Phillips on his album.

The track then stayed idle for two years when in December 1978 Keith decided to give Rolling Stones fans a Christmas gift with the release of "Run Rudolph Run" b/w The Harder They Come. The results were very positive among the Stones fan base, with Keith giving his fans a sample of his two loves: Reggae music & Chuck Berry.

Playing the Song Live

In 1988, Keith's fans got treated to a live version of "Run Rudolph Run" when he added an extra show to his Talk is Cheap Tour at the Brendan Byrne Arena on the 17th of December. The song was done as a Christmas treat for all the fans that came to the show. Johnnie Johnson was a special guest on piano for the song, which was part of the encore. Then almost 10 years to the date of the Brendan Byrne show, Keith was a special guest for Ronnie Spector’s Christmas show held at NYC Life Café. Again Keith was in the Christmas spirit and decided to perform "Run Rudolph Run". He had to get a copy of his record so the Ronnie Spector group and guests could familiarize themselves with Keith’s version of the song and lyrics. Luckily a copy was found and Keith and the band got to rehearse it at the sound check earlier that day. The show that night went off without a hitch and when Keith came on there was a near crush in the front of the stage. The crowd really went wild as Keith blasted into "Run Rudolph Run", which was only the second time he performed the song to a live audience. Feeling the energy, he stayed on to do one more song for the encore: "Be My Baby".

Keith Richards To Publish His Autobiography

NEW YORK Michael Pietsch, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Keith Richards will write his highly anticipated autobiography for publication in Autumn 2010. James Fox, the author of White Mischief, is collaborating with Richards on a book that will recount one of the most eventful, influential, and closely watched lives of modern times. Richards was represented in the negotiations by his manager Jane Rose and literary agent Ed Victor. Keith Richards is a guitarist, songwriter, singer and a founding member of The Rolling Stones. With songwriting partner and Stones lead vocalist Mick Jagger, he has written and recorded some of the most enduring songs of our times, including “Satisfaction,” “Jumpin’Jack Flash,” and “Start Me Up.” Richards selected James Fox as co-author based on his admiration of Fox’s 1982 book White Mischief, an account of the unsolved murder of the 22nd Lord Erroll in Kenya in 1941.

“Keith Richards has stood cool at the center of the hurricane for nearly fifty years,” said Pietsch. “His story, in his own words—the band, the songs, the tours, the life—will be the most eagerly awaited book ever to come out of the hallowed halls of rock and roll.”

Little, Brown acquired world English language rights together with Weidenfeld & Nicolson in the United Kingdom, and the editions will be published simultaneously. Little, Brown and Weidenfeld & Nicolson are divisions of Hachette Livre. Pietsch will edit the book and publish it in collaboration with Alan Samson, Publisher of Weidenfeld & Nicolson.

The story currently circulating around the net that Keith snorted his Dad's ashes with some cocaine is totally untrue. To set the record straight, Keith has sent us the following statement:

"The complete story is lost in the usual slanting! The truth of the matter is that I planted a sturdy English Oak. I took the lid off the box of ashes and he is now growing oak trees and would love me for it!!! I was trying to say how tight Bert and I were. That tight!!! I wouldn't take cocaine at this point in my life unless I wished to commit suicide."

Keith will induct the 1960's girl group The Ronettes into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2007. The ceremony will take place March 12 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and will be televised live on VH1 Classic, VH1 and AOL "Live".

Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll wins top DVD honors

Chuck Berry: Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll, the documentary by director Taylor Hackford about the rock pioneer's 60th birthday concert, organized by Keith in 1986, won top honors at the third annual Music DVD Awards Tuesday.

The film was named best of show, beating more than 100 contenders in Home Media Magazine's contest at the Wyndham Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood.

Hail! Hail! also won for best vintage concert and best special features/bonus materials. It was released last June by Image Entertainment in two-disc and four-disc configurations.

Judges praised the 1987 film for capturing Berry's fire and passion onstage, as well as the irascible veteran's outrageous exploits before, during, and after the concert at the Fox Theater in St Louis, Mo.

Rock and Roll Circus PBS broadcast premiere

On Sunday, January 28th, The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus will have its WLIW channel 21 broadcast premiere in New York’s Tri-State-area. Viewers can tune-in to see the complete program at 8 pm and, again at 11:30 pm.

Contrary to stories in newspapers in New Zealand and the UK, Keith Richards did not undergo a second operation. The first and only operation was done on Monday, May 8, and was 100% successful. There was no brain damage. He continues to improve as expected.

Keith Richards Recovering From Surgery

Keith Richards underwent surgery this morning at The Ascot Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. The operation was a complete success and Keith is already up and talking with his family today. He will need a few weeks recuperation.

Last week Keith was under observation in Auckland following a fall in Fiji and was feeling well after being examined by doctors last week, however after complaining of headaches yesterday doctors thought it prudent to move ahead with a small operation to remove the pressure.

The Rolling Stones" A Bigger Bang European tour" goes ahead and will now start in June 2006.

Full details of the re-scheduling of the tour will be announced shortly.

Keith Richards Making A Speedy Recovery

Keith Richards was hospitalized for a mild concussion he suffered while vacationing in Fiji. Keith was injured earlier this week and flown to a hospital in Auckland, New Zealand for treatment. "Following treatment locally and as a precautionary measure, he flew to a hospital accompanied by his wife, Patti, for observation," said Stones publicist Fran Curtis. Doctors say Keith is making a speedy recovery.

Since September 2005, Rolling Stones audience members at concert stops throughout North America have raised $90,000 to help Red Cross rebuild communities ravaged by hurricane Katrina.
